In his new book, Deadly Trip: The Last Exploration of Henry Hudson—A Story of Mutiny and Murder in the Frozen (Basic Books), Mancall tackles the mystery of how Henry Hudson passed away, examining accounts left by the voyage's just survivors—the mutineers.

"Hudson was among one of the most intrepid and important travelers of his age," says Mancall, USC teacher of background and sociology. "He wasn't a guy that easily quit."
